ToughGirl is lucky to get a few minutes with real-life hottie, model, and weight-loss advocate Bradley Jarryd–better known on social media as The Brad Ass. Despite his busy schedule, he was very accommodating and answered some questions we threw his way.
Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, Brad and his parents moved to Florida in the United States in the early 90s. He recalls, as a chubby kid, drinking 3 to 4 cans of soda a day, along with fast-food, sweet breakfast pastries, and most of the same processed junk kids eat these days. He’s come a long way and has since found a commitment to personal development where he would later successfully lose weight, become a model, help others lose weight safely, and ultimately become a happier person.
It all sounds so simple and you’re probably thinking, “Yeah well he got it figured out.” Sure. Eventually. But Brad still had to go through the emotions of feeling awkward about himself. Luckily he was tall so whatever excess weight he had was spread out and instead of looking fat, he found himself in the “chubby” category. When he reached freshman year in high school, he jumped on the internet to research on effective exercises to help him lose weight. He used whatever resources were available to him to get to a gym, sign up, and commit a new and healthy lifestyle.
These days, what Brad finds challenging has been achieving the body he wants while traveling and being at the mercy of whatever food is available to the place he’s visiting. Sometimes he won’t have access to a good gym. This is why it’s so important to have a good nutritional foundation because it will allow you some room for “cheat” meals when necessary. Brad says he loves what proper nutrition and consistent exercise has done for him and it has certainly helped him break into the world of modelling.
“The better shape I’m in, the more people I can reach and inspire.”
This makes all the sacrifices he’s made in pursuit of his dream physique, worthwhile. “Dealing with all the sacrifice can be tough, but I take it one day at a time knowing it’ll all be worth it.” He points out that creating positive habits and taking baby steps is what it takes to get to your goal, no matter how overwhelming it seems at first.
His workout routine is a combination of weights and HIIT cardio four times weekly. He keeps it interesting by rotating cardio machines and incorporates free weight compound movements like squats and deadlifts.
When ToughGirl asked Brad what brings him joy, he said, “When I realise how blessed I am. Knowing I’m healthy, I have loving friends and family…simple things like warmth, the sun, the outdoors–basically everything California is.”
To Brad, being Tough means persevering through challenge in order to achieve a better outcome. “I would be the last person to call myself a tough guy because I am fortunate enough to not have to go through and major health, family, or financial issues like many have. However, I know all too well what rejection is like and how to persevere regardless of how emotionally drained you are. Getting back on the horse after you’ve been thrown off for the 100th time makes me a Tough Guy.“
